MANY YOUNG people came out last year to enjoy the variety of Literacy Day activities at Suwilaawks Community School.

LITERACY DAY is about reading, but there are many ways to learn and sharpen literacy skills with various activities at this year’s Family Literacy Celebration.

This year’s event will include Playing for Literacy word games, board games, language activities and many others, says Rosemary Craig, literacy outreach coordinator from Terrace Community Literacy.

The different stations that children go to will each have a different way to learn about, and build, literacy skills while having fun.

And to encourage literacy afterward, every family will receive a free book to take home.

Last year’s participants made paper bag puppets, which helps build oral language and is part of literacy too, said Craig about last year’s activities. “[Children] speak before they read and write,” she said about how oral language is a part of literacy. One group made spiders to go with a book they learned about last year, she added.

Volunteering again this year will be University of Northern BC final year education students, who are a great help, said Craig.

These future teachers are showing a great commitment to families and the community, said Craig.

The Playing and Reading Together Family Literacy Celebration, takes place this weekend.
