It's Aboriginal Awareness Week May 21 to 24 and the Terrace RCMP's aboriginal policing constable has been busy working with Kitsumkalum and Kitselas for a safer and healthier community.
Const. Jennifer Spetch works with the two communities to address their specific policing needs in addition to general duty police officers who respond to, and investigate, calls on the reserves.
“Having a police officer that is actively engaged in proactive and positive community endeavors adds to the relationship between the RCMP and the Aboriginal communities. It is important that there is a relationship with good communication between us. We need to work together to ensure the community’s needs are met,” says Inspector Dana Hart, Officer in Charge Terrace RCMP.
One of the programs that the officer has been involved in this year is instructing the Drug Abuse Resistance Education Program to Grade 5 youths and about 150 students took this program this year.
Another program that the officer is involved in is the Kitsumkalum Aboriginal Run/Walk Group with whom she took part in the 2013 Vancouver Sun Run in April.
This is part of the RCMP’s provincial priorities to promote and contribute to safer and healthier Aboriginal communities, which is managed by Aboriginal Policing Services, who works with and coordinates the delivery of programs and services to more than 200 Aboriginal communities in B.C.
