Uplands Elementary in Terrace is returning with a musical theatre production following a four-year absence.

The school has traditionally offered a production every two years, but the COVID-19 pandemic lengthened the time frame, noted school music teacher Robin Hollett.

“The Grade 6 students the last production we held are now at Caledonia,” she said of the time interval.

This year, Uplands students are staging “The Best Little Theatre in Town,” a story of drama and comedy where the world of humans and the world of animals combine when a small town theatre is threatened with closure.

Students from Grade 3 to Grade 6 are involved and have been working on their roles since auditions were held in February.

What makes this production different is that there two completely different casts — one performs June 9 at the REM Lee Theatre and the other performs June 10 at the theatre.

Added up, that works out to 140 students with each requiring a costume.

Hollett credited experienced costumers Marilyn Earl and and Lisa Strydom with providing the right tone and look for the students. Amy Pienaar provided the backdrops.

The involvement of community members includes the pit band of bass and vocalist Marc Olivier-Chouinard, percussionist Darryl McDicken, violinist Julia Yoo and flautist Katie Hollett.

Robin Hollett adds to her producer and director duties by playing the piano.

Tickets are at Misty River Books and showtime on June 9 and June 10 is 7 p.m.

It is suitable for all ages.
