The proceeds from this year's and last year's Kitsumkalum Fishing Derby were donated to the R.E.M. Lee Foundation yesterday.
A total of $6,000 was given to aid in the purchase of a portable ultrasound unit, an effort which is nearly fulfilled, says Karlene Clark from the foundation.
One of the event organizers, Anona Budden, says they decided to donate to the purchase of the portable ultrasound unit because it is a much needed piece of equipment for the area.
She explained the money was raised by the sale of more than 330 tickets for the derby.
Once in place in Mills Memorial Hospital, the portable ultrasound unit will be used in the emergency cardiac and intensive care oncology units.
The R.E.M. Lee Foundation has been working towards the $115,000 needed to purchase the machine for the past 15 months.
