A LOCAL artist received an award for his artistic achievements during his lengthy career.

Stan Bevan, an instructor at the Freda Diesing School of Northwest Coast Art here, received a BC Creative Achievement Award for First Nations’ Art at a ceremony in Vancouver Nov 25.

He received $5,000 and the seal of the British Columbia Creative Achievement Award for First Nations’ Art.

“It’s exciting and it’s an honour,” said Bevan, when his name was announced as a recipient last month.

“I’m really pleased to be recognized with the award and it’s exciting because what it’s done is it’s highlighting the things happening here in the north with the Freda Diesing School  [of Northwest  Coast Art] and Northwest Community College and the cultural development in Kitselas and all work done there.”

Bevan, who is Tsimshian/Tahltan/Tlingit, went to the Kitanmaax School of Northwest Coast Indian Art in Hazelton and did an apprenticeship with his uncle, Dempsey Bob.

In more than 30 years as an artist, he has created many, many pieces of artwork, which include masks, poles, bowls and frontlets created in the Tsimshian and Tahltan-Tlingit style.

He has received significant provincial, national and international commissions and his work is widely exhibited.

The annual BC Creative Achievement Awards for First Nations’ Art is a juried competition celebrating artistic excellence in traditional, contemporary or media art.
