Bands rocked the Terrace Curling Club on Saturday, raising $3,100 for the Tahltan Fire Relief Fund.

People filled the venue to its 200-person capacity on August 25 to see performances from Smithers’ band The Infirmary, Kitwanga’s The Brazen Harlots, and Terrace-based singer Simbiyez Wilson. The line-up ramped up the crowd for the concert’s organizers, the Terrace Coastal Drifters, whose garage rock and roll sound played until the early hours of the morning.

“We wanted to help out as much as we could playing music,” said Oscar Carlick, Coastal Drifters guitarist and vocalist. “We had a lot of people sharing it and a lot of help from the community to get the word out about it. It was really cool to see that happen, because we have a lot of family and friends who are affected by [the fires].”

Originally, the bash was supposed to be a way for all the bands to have one final show together to end the summer. But when the fires in northwest B.C. started, Carlick said the chance to turn the concert into a way of helping those in need was a perfect scenario.

“We were skeptical of asking the other bands because they were travelling out of town… but they were more than willing to just give their time for free to help out and play some music.”

The sold-out show raised more than the band expected, Carlick said, which included a $1,500 donation from Rick McDaniel, a local real estate agent who donated at the concert.

All the proceeds will go toward helping those affected by the Telegraph Creek fires.
