A local figure skater has won a bursary leading off of the B.C. Winter Games held in Fort St. John Feb. 20-23.

Makayla Forrest was one of two athletes from the northwest zone and among 16 from around the province to be chosen to receive a Coast Capital Savings Leadership Bursary.

It was presented at the closing ceremonies Feb. 23.

Tara Walter from Coast Capital Savings called the games a “fantastic platform to build and celebrate these qualities, whether it’s goal-setting, perseverance, team work or leadership.”

Coast Capital Savings Credit Union is concentrated on the Lower Mainland and lower Vancouver Island.

Forrest was one of two local figure skaters from the northwest zone at the games, placing 15th in the juvenile women category. The second figure skater, Brianne Monsen, placed 17th in the pre-novice women category.

Three Terrace gymnasts were also at the games — Hadyn Taylor placing 23rd in all around female JO 7 and 11th in beam women JO 7, Carissa Nenninger placing 25th in all around female JO 8 and 11th in beam women JO 8 and Finnley Ivens placing 31st in all around male L3 and 7th in pommel horse male L3.

A ninth place finish was earned by Rowan Klein in archery boys two-day aggregate compound and Jillian Papke placed fifth in archery girls two-day aggregate compound.

The northwest wheel chair basketball team, with strong representation from Terrace, earned a bronze, the first time a team in this category has won a medal, and the northwest girls ringette team, made up mostly of Terrace athletes, placed sixth.
