Terrace triathlete finds triumph at world championships, eyes next challenge

Jenna Smith credits community support and personal resilience for her successs

Jenna Smith, a 32-year-old athlete from Terrace, celebrated an impressive performance at the 2023 HAMBURG WASSER World Triathlon Sprint and Relay Championships from July 13 to 16.

The triathlon event consisted of three continuous and sequential endurance disciplines, including a 750-metre swim, a 20-kilometre cycle, and a 5-kilometre run. This demanding competition showcases the athlete’s versatility and stamina.

Smith’s journey to the global triathlon started with a successful bid in the Wasa Lake Triathlon qualifier, near Cranbrook, where she secured third place in her age category. Four years ago, she participated in her first triathlon, the Tyhee Lake Triathlon, demonstrating her ambition and skill in the sport.

“That was my first one and I got hooked,” Smith recalled of her inaugural triathlon.

Inspired by Royleen Wensvoort’s participation in the 2018 championships in Australia, the Hamburg event marked Smith’s fourth triathlon.

Already eyeing her next race in Edmonton, which serves as another qualifier, Smith shared her aspiration to compete in the upcoming world championships in Spain. “It’s a lot of fun. And it’s a really neat experience, just seeing all the athletes in countries around the world come together,” she said.

Smith’s success can be attributed to more than her athleticism. She stressed the importance of setting goals and working towards them and acknowledged the significant role played by her mother and the supportive community in Terrace. Financial and emotional support from her small town has been vital.

“We have a lot of amazing athletes in Terrace, especially in the running community, full of great, supportive people,” Smith said. “I’m really just so thankful for the support from the community.”

Smith also extended thanks to her sponsors, MacCarthy GM, Soucie Construction, and Stewart Bulk Terminals LTD, and expressed gratitude to Amplifon Hearing and Western Equipment for assisting in her fundraising efforts, including selling chocolates.

Editor’s Note: A previous version of the article indicated Smith participated in the Wasa Lake Triathlon four years ago, but it was, in fact, the Tyhee Lake Triathlon.
