More than 200 people were on Shames Mountain Feb. 3 and Feb. 4 for its Taste of Spring event featuring free tubing, lessons and music.

The event followed a closure because of warmer weather and heavy rains to the point snow had melted down to the ground.

Recent cooling temperatures now mean Shames has plans to re-open the chairlift and t-bar as of Feb. 8.

“The cooling we have seen in the last week has really done the hill wonders, it’s like it shrink wrapped the saturated snow, hardening it and preserving it,” general manager Christian Theberge said in a Facebook post.

Theberge called this snow season challenging because of weather-caused closures and reduced revenues.

Plans put in place, however, have been working, he added.

“At the end of December, we had financially caught up with the previous season through new product development, increased events, and corporate sponsorship of events and programs. Since then, things have gotten more difficult because of the warm weather in January,” Theberge stated.

Theberge said Shames is optimistic for February into March with hopes of more skiers spending more money on the mountain.

“With all the challenges this tiny ski hill has faced and overcome throughout the years, we are still here, we are still fighting to preserve Shames Mountain for generations to come,” Theberge stated.
