Kitimat Demons defeat Terrace River Kings

THE Kitimat Ice Demons defeated the Terrace River Kings 4-3 in overtime in game one of the Central Interior Hockey League playoffs.

Kitimat's Nick Markowsky deflected Ben Rumley's point shot for the winner at 12:38 of extra period, giving Kitimat a 1-0 series lead. The Ice Demons also got goals from Jeremy Brady, Terry Whalen and Jeff Mildenberger, overcoming 1-0 and 3-2 deficits to force overtime.

The hometown River Kings had goals from Derrick Jurista, Tristan Murray and Corbin Legros

It was one of those nights for the River Kings. They played well, overcoming a hard charging Kitimat attack early in the game as the Ice Demons really pushed the pace. The River Kings were able to weather that storm thanks in part to strong play on the power play. The cocky Ice Demons team was guilty of some undisciplined play that Terrace capitalized on with 2 power play goals.

But Terrace had another goal disallowed due to a high stick. Terrace argued vehemently that Kitimat's overtime forcing goal by Mildenberger was a result of goaltender interference. Murray, who had 1 goal and 2 assists, missed a beautiful chance to end the game late in regulation. And the lucky overtime winner handcuffed Garrett Muir who otherwise had a strong game.

It was an entertainingly close game where both sides were worthy of victory. Though the home team did not get the win, Terrace's largest crowd of the season were treated to an excellent game.

The best of 3 series continues next weekend in Kitimat. The puck drops on game 2 on February 2nd at 8pm at Kitimat's Tamitik Arena. Game 3, if necessary, goes Sunday, February 3rd at 1pm, also in Kitimat. Tickets are available at the door 30 minutes prior to puck drop.
