Kermode Kids run triathlon
It was perfect weather conditions for the first annual Kermode Kids Triathlon, and 14 athletes took up the challenge to swim, bike and run.
The event began with a timed swim at the Terrace Aquatic Centre, followed by bike and run sections, which took place from Northwest Community College May 30.
Triathlon coach Crystal Thomas said she is very happy with the day – something she plans to organize again next year.
Distances varied in accordance to age, with the youngest group of 8 and 9 year olds running a course with a 100 metre swim, 5 km bike ride and a 1 km run. The oldest group 14 and 15 year olds and included a 400 metre swim, 10 km bike ride and a 4 km run.
Thomas said most of the athletes were first timers for triathlon and she hopes this number grows in the future.
“I’ve had this dream for a while, to have a kid’s triathlon here and to see it come to fruition was pretty great,” she said.
Thomas expressed her appreciation to all of the volunteers who came out to help and give up their time in support of the day.
Next year she plans to coach athletes in older categories in preparation for Terrace to send youths to the BC Summer Games to compete in triathlon.
Next for triathlon in Terrace will be the Barkman on July 3, which will include individual and team options in three distance
formats, as well as the du-athlon (run-bike-run) for athletes hesitant to brave the swimming portion, which will be held at Lakelse Lake.
