In Memoriam

Thelma Reay

(Grannie)

21st May, 1906 - 13th August, 2007

Mrs. Thelma Reay (née Hargrove) passed away peacefully aged 101 years on August 13, 2007 at Terraceview Lodge, Terrace. She was born the third of four children in Liverpool, England, widowed in 1981 and emigrated to Canada to live with her only daughter Elaine Shepherd in Terrace in 1991. She moved to Terraceview Lodge in 2005. She is survived by her daughter Elaine (Al), her four grandchildren David (Karen), Jon, Karen (Tyson) and Jenn (Ryan), her two great grandchildren, Sarah and Andrew and in England by her three nieces Iris (Charles), Anita and Rosemary (Derek) and her nephew Tony (Joan) and their respective children.

In her own way she was a truly remakable lady. Her passing is the end of an era and we will miss the smile, the still blue eyes, her unwavering sense of purpose, the royal wave as she passed by in her wheelchair (her chariot), her love of songs and music and tennis, her favourite sayings, her knitting and her love of simple things. She was amazingly talented although many of her dreams were not realized. She never had an important job or made a lot of money and her life may have seemed very ordinary, but she taught us that in the end these things are not important.

The family would like to thank all of the nursing staff in the Special Care Unit and the members of the Recreation Department at Terraceview Lodge for their devoted and gentle care of Mrs. Reay during her entire time there. Special thanks also go to her dearest friend Rosie Cruickshank who brought so much joy and comfort into her life right to the end.

“She seemed a thing that could not feel

The touch of earthly years...

But she is in her grave, and, oh

the difference to me.”

The Lucy Poems - William Wordsworth
