Betty was born on November 30, 1921 in Sydney, Australia, one of three children of Ada and Ashley Plowman.

Betty came to Canada in 1947 on one of the first civilian ships from Australia to cross the Pacific Ocean after the Second World War. Trained as a registered nurse at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney, Australia Betty received her Canadian RN certification in Ottawa and spent five months there before moving to just outside Montreal to work in a tuberculosis sanitarium.

A big jump came in 1948 when Betty moved to the north coast to work in a First Nations tuberculosis sanitarium in Miller Bay, just outside of Prince Rupert. It was in Prince Rupert she met the love of her life, Jock Campbell, a logger, and after a courtship of three weeks, they were married July 9, 1949 in Vancouver. The couple settled in Prince Rupert, spending the winters there while Betty worked at the Prince Rupert hospital. In the summer, they lived at a logging camp on Khutzamateen Inlet.

Daughter Susan was born in Prince Rupert in 1950 and in 1953, after the family moved to Terrace where Betty worked at the old Red Cross hospital on Little Ave., a second daughter, Leslie, was born.

Betty moved into Mills Memorial Hospital when it opened, starting a 33 year career which included being head nurse of the operating/emergency departments. She was also its first infection control officer.

Betty was very active in the community being an avid swimmer, grass hockey player and golfer. She was one of the founding members of the Terrace Beautification Society and served as its president for several terms.

Betty was the local Regional Coordinator of the BC Heart and Stroke Foundation for 20 years and President of the Seniors Advisory Committee for several years. Betty loved Terrace and felt Terrace was very good to her!

Services will be held 2 p.m. August 13 at the Evangelical Free Church.
