Andrew Toews

TOEWS, Andrew of Abbotsford, passed away peacefully at Valhaven Retirement Home at the age of 95 on May 8, 2004. Andrew began his teaching career at the age of 17 in one-room schools in southern Manitoba. His teaching career spanned 47 years, the last 25 years as vice-principal and high school teacher in Terrace B.C. He is fondly remembered by his many students and colleagues. He had a life long interest in Canadian and Mennonite history, woodworking, gardening and music. He was an active member of the Mennonite Brethren church community and played a major role in establishing the church in Terrace. He was also a longtime member of the Gideon Society. His family was always his primary concern. Andrew was devoted to his loving wife Neta (Klassen) to whom he was married for 59 years. Her death in 1996 created a big void in his life . He was a loving and generous father to his daughter Jeannie (Voth), who predeceased him in 2002 and his sons Peter and David and their families. He will be missed by his sons, his daughters-in-law Joanne and Judy, his son-in-law Bert Voth and his grandchildren, Alex Voth (Sarah), Andrew Voth (Vesna), Maureen Leboe (Byron), Sarah Merriman (Brad), Erica Toews, and Adam Toews, as well as his great grandchildren, Taylor Ann and Aaron. Predeceased by sisters Elizabeth (Barkmann), Lydia (Schellenberg), Eva (Barkmann), and Anna (Friesen), he is mourned by his sisters Amanda Barkmann, Elma Barkmann and Rosella Toews (Vernon) and the families of his sisters. He will be remembered by his family, friends, students and colleagues for his generosity of spirit, his passion for learning, his love of family and his booming laugh. Many thanks to the staff at Valhaven for all of the care and love they showed him. Funeral Service were held on Thursday, May 13, 2004 at 11:00 am at Central Heights MB Church, 1661 McCallum Rd. Abbotsford BC . Pastor Henry Wiebe and Pastor Chris Douglas officiated. Reception followed. Interment was held at Musselwhite Cemetery.
