THIS WINTER may have brought spectacular snowfall that has enhanced the skiing experience on Shames Mountain, but it has also brought challenges.
Officials today announced that because of very low temperatures, the mountain won't be opening tomorrow.
"The decision was made to close Shames Mountain for tomorrow Friday Jan. 20th, due to extreme temperatures and a nasty wind chill," a notice from Shames operator My Mountain Co-op stated this morning.
Updates will be posted as necessary.
Earlier in January extreme amounts of snowfall resulted in occasional road closures until avalanche hazards could be cleared out.
The Northwest Regional Airport temperature readings this morning listed temperatures of -23 but, with a wind chill, that number drops to -39.
Hudson Bay Mountain in Smithers was closed yesterday and is closed again today because of low temperatures.
"As a company we place the safety of our guests and HBM Team first. The forecast is for warmer temperatures and we are expecting to be open on Friday," read a Hudson May Mountain release.
