Tisigar Lake wildfire fanned by high winds

HIGH WINDS fanned the flames of the Tisigar Lake wildfire by Dease Lake and increasing its size late this week.

The wildfire grew about 100 hectares to 8,589 hectares June 9, reported the Northwest Fire Centre.

However, the fire grew to the northwest, away from Highway 37 and any local communities, said the centre.

Cooler temperatures and higher relative humidity was expected yesterday, June 10, but gusting winds, were still a concern.

More than 150 workers and two pieces of heavy equipment are on-site, working to construct a guard around the south and east parts of the fire.

If weather permits, firefighters will be removing fuel between the guard and the fire’s edge by conducting controlled burns.

These burns are necessary to reduce fuel build-up and reduce the fire hazard.

The restricted area order is still in effect and applies to all Crown land from 1km north of Wheeler Lake to the Beaver Dam rest stop and 25 km east and west of Highway 37.

People may enter this area only in the course of travelling to and from their residences or when using Highway 37 as defined in the Highway Act.

The Wildfire Management Branch reminds the public to re-evaluate their property’s protection against wildfires.

It's a good time fto FireSmart  homes, especially for those who live in forested areas.
