Steelhead regulations unchanged

The province has opted to maintain the current regulations in the Skeena River as far as the steelhead fishery is concerned, the Ministry of Natural Resource Operations said in an information bulletin earlier this month.

The province has opted to maintain the current regulations in the Skeena River as far as the steelhead fishery is concerned, the Ministry of Natural Resource Operations said in an information bulletin earlier this month.

Changes were being considered under the Skeena Quality Waters Strategy, a document that has been in the works since 2007. Throughout the process, the government consulted with stakeholders - which included anglers, guides, First Nations and local government and business leaders  - to identify concerns surrounding the steelhead fishery.

What the ministry still wants to look at is the impacts to the economy and to tourism due to any regulation changes.

The results of the study will affect the 2013 to 2015 angling seasons.
