Late last night Kitimat RCMP received a request for assistance in the Douglas Channel near the Kitamaat Village. A male had alerted residents that he was in distress and was rescued by a local First Nations fisheries officer 150 metres from shore. A second male, believed to be from Terrace, was reported to still be in the water. Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre, Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue, Kitimat Search and Rescue, a Kitimat RCMP vessel, two Haisla Nation Fishing boats, and a Buffalo fixed wing aircraft were deployed to help search for the missing male.

As of this morning, a helicopter was secured to work in partnership with Kitimat Search in Rescue to assist the other parties with locating the missing boater. West Coast Marine has also been deployed to join the search party.

The search is ongoing.

We have a reporter on scene and will update this story as information becomes available.
