Northwest B.C. gets new medical health officer

Dr. Raina Fumerton's job is to improve the health of residents

THE Northern Health Authority has hired Dr. Raina Fumerton as its northwest medical health officer.

Based in Terrace, Fumerton's job is to improve the health of people by preventing illness, promoting healthy choices, and helping eliminate or avoid outbreaks.

Fumerton received a Bachelor of Arts degree, a Bachelor of Science degree and medical degree from UBC and is a senior resident in the public health and preventative medicine residency programs at UBC. She expects to complete that program next summer.

Fumerton served a residency in public health in the northwest in 2011.

“I have a strong passion for public health, and jumped at the opportunity to take over as the new northwest medical health officer,” said Fumerton.

She replaces Dr. David Bowering who retired earlier this year.

Bowering was also the Northern Health Authority's chief medical health officer and the authority has since filled that position as well.
