A MURDER trial ended today when the accused, Brandon Davey, who was scheduled to testify, changed his plea to guilty.
After about an hour and a half of discussion between prosecutor and defence and the accused, defence lawyer Donna Turko told Mister Justice Selwyn Romilly of the BC Supreme Court that Davey was changing his plea to guilty to manslaughter.
The jury was called in and Mister Justice Romilly thanked them for their time and discharged them, which means their job is over.
Prosecutor Barry Zacharias asked for an adjournment to tomorrow, May 9, for a sentencing hearing as he and defence had not had time to prepare.
Mister Justice Romilly agreed to the adjournment.
On Nov. 17, 2009, Terrace RCMP found a seriously injured male, who they say had been assaulted and had been reported to be covered in blood and screaming, in Thornhill at about 4:15 p.m., reported police at that time.
He was transported to Mills Memorial Hospital and later medevaced to Vancouver where he died of his injuries, said police.
Police arrested a suspect and said it was not a random act as both the suspect and victim knew each other.
Davey was later charged with second degree murder.
His trial began two weeks ago and was scheduled to go another week or two.
