Councillor wants $91,000 for Shames buy

MY MOUNTAIN Co-op isn't going down without a fight even although city council voted against loaning the group money at its last council meeting.

MY MOUNTAIN Co-op isn't going down without a fight even although city council voted against giving the group any money to buy Shames Mountain at its last meeting.

City councillor Bruce Martindale has announced his intention to bring forth a motion to give the co-op an expected $91,000 surplus from a provincial grant when council meets again Aug. 22.

The city received $375,000 in all from the province and is using most of it – $284,000 – to tear down the old Terrace Co-op building.

A Martindale motion Aug. 8 to give the ski co-op $200,000 made up of the grant surplus augmented by borrowing failed in a close 4-3 vote.

The My Mountain Co-op group wants to raise $2 million by year's end for the operation, maintenance and repairs to the Shames Mountain ski hill so it can open for this next ski season.

It has raised about $400,000 so far.

Prince Rupert also turned down a request to give the co-op $200,000.

The co-op has yet to hear back from Kitimat city council and will approach the Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine this Friday with the same appeal for money.
