Watch for rental scams

If a rental looks too good to be true, it likely is, and as someone found out with an online rental recently.

Terrace RCMP received a complaint of a fraud regarding a bogus rental posting on Kijiji at 9 a.m. Aug. 5.

The posting advertised a local property for rent for $999 per month (utilities included), said police.

The fraudster was requesting that the first and last month's rent be forwarded via "Money Gram" and once the funds were received, the keys would be mailed out, said police.

The house in question is actually for sale and the attached email address advertised by the scammer was almost identical to the real email address for the legitimate property – only one letter was different, said police.

It was confirmed through the property owners that the house is for sale and not to be rented, said police.

This ad has since been removed from the site by Kijiji.
