School recess returns
School times are back to normal this week in the Coast Mountains school district for the first time since October.
The district had cancelled morning recess last fall after saying its non-unionized managers could no longer keep up supervision.
Teachers had been refusing to supervise recess and undertake other duties because of their contract dispute.
Without recess, schools started late.
Teachers were ordered back to doing supervision and other duties March 15 under Bill 22. That legislation halts any job action for six more months while a mediator attempts to resolve the ongoing contract dispute between B.C. teachers and the province.
Teachers are, however, voting April 17-18 to decide if they wish to pull their involvement in extra curricular activities up to the end of the school year. That could affect cultural, sporting and other activities held outside of school hours.
At that time teachers will also be deciding if they want to hold another strike vote and stage another full-scale walk out in defiance of back to work legislation.
