Hwy16 west of Terrace is now open to single lane alternating traffic, after a rock slide closed the road this morning.

Ministry of Transportation official Don Ramsay said crews are on-site clearing the road, and early estimates are that it would be open to traffic again by noon today proved correct.

The slide took place at about 2 a.m. and brought down rocks and snow, completely blocking the westbound lane and spreading about 15 – 20 metres wide.

Ramsay estimated the rock to be about a metre deep on the white line of the road, thinning out to about a half metre at the centre lane.

“It's difficult to see the actual volume of rock because of the amount of snow that came with it,” Ramsay explained.

Updates on the road's condition are available on Drive B.C.
