Former retail store catches fire
TERRACE firefighters were out early this morning extinguishing a blaze at the former Yellow House building.
The call came at about 3:30 am with the situation being described as a confirmed structure fire, said Dean Prins, a lieutenant with the Terrace Fire Department and its on-scene commander.
"When we arrived on scene smoke was coming from the building; it was definitely a fire," he said.
"From what we could tell it originated in the basement."
Prins is describing the blaze as suspicious given the building has been vacant for some time.
Fire officials and RCMP officers will be back at the location later today to continue their investigation.
Prins said the fire spread from the basement to the main floor of the old, wooden structure.
"There's extensive damage," he said of the interior of the building. The fire did not spread to the outside of the building.
Whether the building's structure remains sound has yet to be determined, Prins added.
The Yellow House retail business shifted to the Skeena Landing complex at the Hwy37/16 intersection last year and is now called the Flying Fish.
This is the fourth early morning call out for Terrace firefighters this week. There have been two faulty alarms at Caledonia Senior Secondary School and there was a fire in the engine compartment of a Kalum Kabs taxi.
