Airport passenger total passes 110,000
THE NORTHWEST Regional Airport just missed chalking up November as its best November of all time thanks to bad weather hitting the area at the end of the month.
The airport fell just short of hitting five figures with a passenger count of 9,836 for the month.
But for 10 missed flights because of weather, the airport would have surpassed the previous November record of 9,945 passenger set in 2007 and easily hit the 10,000-plus level.
Still, November's passenger total pushed the year to date number past 110,000 to 110,619 and could mean a year-end total topping 120,000.
That's more than airport officials originally estimated.
The annual total for 2010 was 105,389 with 2009 coming in at 107,996, 2008 at 119,360 and 2007 at 122,070, which for now stands as the all-time annual record.
Almost 200cm of snow fell from Nov. 20 to Nov. 29, causing problems with clearing snow and from weather conditions.
“All the Saturday night flights were cancelled,” he said of one of the worst days which was Nov. Nov. 26.
Hendry has attributed the growth in traffic this year to an upswing in industrial activity in the north, making the airport a key transportation player.
