Two school board trustees announce election plans

Two school board trustees for the Coast Mountains School District have announced plans to run again in the upcoming trustee election.

Art Erasmus from Terrace and Raymond Raj from Kitimat both said they will be running for re-election tonight during the first school board meeting of the 2011/2012 year held at the school district's offices.

Stewart trustee, Leigh Kasum, said she can't say her plans at this time because she had not planned on running for another term.

I didn't intend to, but I will not leave our community in the lurch if no one steps up to the plate,” Kasum said.

Yet to announce plans are Terrace trustees Diana Penner and Tanis Kilpatrick, along with Thornhill trustee Gary Turner, Kitimat trustee Huey-lin Wu and Hazelton trustee Lynn Newbery.

School board chair, Barry Pankhurst, has also yet to announce whether or not he will run for another three-year term.

The number of trustee positions will change this year from nine to seven with one position in Terrace and Kitimat each eliminated because of a continual decline in student enrolment.

Trustee elections will be held on Saturday, Nov.19 at various locations across the school district, with Terrace voting to be held at the school district's offices on Kenny St.

Nominations for candidates will be accepted starting Oct. 4 through to Oct. 14.
