STUDENTS IN Kitwanga learned about trades as a career from people working in various fields at a recent trades awareness day.

KITWANGA STUDENTS learned about careers in the trades at an interactive event last month.

Yes 2 It, or Youth Exploring Skills to Industry Training, saw Grade 6 and 7 students  learn about different trades from tradespeople such as a baker, millwright, and mechanic.

Trades trainer for the Coast Mountains School District Brigitta van Heek says it was a big hit with students and parents.

The idea behind the event was to promote early awareness of the trades as a career, she said.

Students visited the new mill in Kitwanga, built coat racks and even had a contest to see who could hammer in a nail the fastest and other things. The students also toured the Kyahwood Forest Products finger joining mill in Moricetown.

Trades awareness days have taken place in the past at Thornhill Elementary and Thornhill Junior.
