SUWILAAWKS COMMUNITY School students celebrate Aboriginal Day yesterday

THE GITLAXDAX Dancers and Xbi'shuundt Dancers joined students at Suwilaawks Community School to celebrate Aboriginal Day yesterday.

Students did activities all day and held an assembly in the afternoon to watch, learn and dance along with the dance groups in the school gym.

They learned that it was Xbi'shuundt, which means mid-summer, which is a time when it's believed the heavens come close to the earth and that's because their ancestors are watching the people to see how they're doing and to listen to whether they're singing the songs their ancestors left for them.

The dancers even got the teachers to dance for the students across the front of the gym, one after the other and each one had to dance differently than the one before and couldn't copy any of the others' moves.

Aboriginal Day celebrations take place for the public this Saturday June 25 at George Little Park.
