A LOCAL class helped out an animal rescue group with a donation of $625 from a school project.

Donna Rivet's Grade 6 class at Thornhill Elementary School organized a social responsibility project with the purpose of raising funds for the Northern Animal Rescue Alliance (NARA), a non-profit, foster-home-based animal rescue organization.

"The students were very proud to have raised $625 for NARA," said school secretary Christine Speidel.

The students set up a raffle for a sterling silver, ruby and aquamarine necklace and sold tickets for $1 at lunchtime at the school for about a month.

The raffle draw was made after the school's Christmas Concert Dec. 12.

NARA members are advocates and caregivers for neglected, abandoned and abused animals here and the group gratefully accepts donations of funds and supplies, which go to the vetting and care of the animals being fostered.

Before being given to an approved home, dogs and cats are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, tattooed, dewormed and given flea and ear mite medication.

Financial donations go to pay for the vet care and for food, beds, crates, cages and other needed items.
